| Wildflower Soapworks is a home-based business nestled in the orchard hills of northern Michigan. We specialize in the creation of natural handcrafted moisturizing soap made from pure coconut, olive, and palm oils, essential oils and/or high quality fragrance oils. Our business began in an unusual way. My daughter had to put together a science project based on a non-fiction book. We went to the bookstore and searched the aisles. Finally a book on soap-making caught our eyes. Once we got home and looked through it thoroughly, she decided that making soap was much too detailed and wanted to do something a little more simple (she was six at the time). That book sat around the house for about a year before I picked it up again. It was November and my husband was processing the meat from his hunting trip when I noticed a big pile of tallow that he was about to throw away. I remembered that in the soap-making book it called for tallow in its soap recipes. This inspired me to find the book again and try the recipe for tallow soap just as the old homesteaders did. The process was long and tedious, but the results were almost magical to me. I was amazed that I could take fats, water, and lye and turn them into something completely usable. "I was hooked!" The soap was rather primitive, it had a "meaty" smell and did not lather well, but that did not stop my enthusiasm. I had a completely natural product for my family to use, but just had to fine tune it a little bit. After plenty of research and trial and error, I found some vegetarian recipes that I was very pleased with; now they are all I use. I had so many different recipes that I was trying and the soap started to pile up. My friends and family had more handmade soap than they could use. I wanted to be able to share this wonderful, natural product and decided it was time to see if any retail stores were interested in carrying handmade soap. -The interest was there. I have since left my job of 12 years to make soap full time. The process in which our soaps are made is called the cold-batch method. It is not a boiled soap, therefore the oils keep their nutritive qualities. None of the glycerin is drawn off as in commercial soaps. The result is a rich bubbly moisturizing bar that leaves your skin clean and silky. The soaps are available individually wrapped and labeled, unwrapped, or in logs so the customer may cut their own piece as desired. Our product line is expanding rapidly. We now have lotions, fragrance oils, lip balms, bath salts, sugar scrubs, and shower gels. All of which can be incorporated into a lovely gift bag. |
